New Destination: Kraków, Poland

Reece was checking out some prices on Easyjet so we’ve decided to go to Kraków, Poland, for the three days that we’ve got free the first week.  It’s only costing $140 return each (handluggage only though!) and apparently is one of the cheapest places in Europe for food etc.  Rick Steves (travel guru with fantastic website) says “The top stop in Poland is Kraków.  And enjoying a drink on its marvelous main market square, you’ll know why.  The biggest square in medieval Europe remains one of Europe’s most gasp-worthy public spaces…  Kraków is the Boston of Poland: a captivating old-fashioned city buzzing with history, intriguing sights, colorful eateries, and college students.”

Reece came up with a big list of places we could go but Rick Steves’ info made it sound great, the flights are cheap and not too long, and it just seemed like a cool place that’s a bit different.

We can go to Auschwitz, about an hour away by public bus, and there’s also the Wieliczka Salt Mine where the miners carved designs into the salt and even made a chapel underground – Reece is saying we won’t have time to do this because we’ll want a day for Auschwitz and a day to see the old town but I’d love to be able to fit it in – it sounds so cool.  There’s also Wawel Castle, Kazimierz Jewish quarter and Oskar Schindler’s factory – hopefully finished being made into a museum by the time we get there – and a shop that just does Christmas ornaments.

W00t for the shop that does just Christmas ornaments, you can add to your collection 🙂

Krakow looks cool, go to Aqua Park!!! lol

Auschwitz is a must-see for sure.

Wow, didn’t know about the Aquapark, would be a good option for the evening when everything else is closed, although I can’t find the opening hours on their website!
This is the Christmas ornament place.
Auschwitz is gonna be freaky and emotional, but I couldn’t go that close and not see it. I want to do that on the first day so I’ve got something nicer to look forward to, and we can end the visit to Krakow on a happier note.

Must go, off to check BEES!

Grr @ bees – I got stung this time!
Turns out when Reece booked the flights he paid a bit extra so we can take checked baggage as well, and he’s also booked our accomodation – really close to the old part of town so a lot of the stuff we want to see is nearby.
